Initiatives during COVID-19

O.P. Jindal University had taken several proactive initiatives in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These initiatives aimed to safeguard the health and well-being of students, staff, and the wider community while ensuring continuity in education and research. Some special measures implemented include the following:

  • Transition to Online Learning: The university transitioned to online classes, ensuring that students could continue their education remotely. It became the first in Chhattisgarh and major parts of Central India to implement an online assessment system during the pandemic.

  • Safety Measures: Implementation of strict protocols such as mandatory mask-wearing, social distancing, and sanitization. WFH options and safety awareness sessions were organized for staff and faculty.

  • COVID Testing and Contact Tracing: Facilities for testing and tracing were provided to manage virus spread within the university community.

  • Mental Health Support: Mental wellness sessions were organized for faculty, students, parents, and the nearby community, with over 25 sessions conducted during the pandemic.

  • Research and Innovation: Faculty members published over 100 research articles and book chapters. More than 50 international conferences were attended virtually during this time.

Sustainable Campus Initiatives

Air & Climate

OPJU is unwavering in its commitment to mitigating its climate impact by actively working towards emissions reduction and energy conservation. These proactive strategies not only minimize OPJU's ecological footprint but also enhance the campus's ability to withstand climate-related challenges such as severe storms, flooding, and droughts.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

OPJU’s greenhouse gas reduction program and energy conservation programs go hand in hand. Despite campus growth, OPJU has reduced energy use and greenhouse gas emissions per square foot significantly.

Outdoor Air Quality

Some ways that OPJU continuously works to improve outdoor air quality on campus include:

  • Replacing gasoline-powered equipment with electric versions
  • Designating OPJU as a Tobacco-Free Campus
  • Implementing a Refrigerant Management Program aimed at reducing the emission of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

Water Conservation

Our campus offers abundant opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to actively participate in water conservation. Various initiatives are continuously underway to ensure the efficient and sustainable management of stormwater, enhance local water bodies, and reduce water consumption in classrooms, residence halls, and landscaping projects. These efforts empower our campus community to play a crucial role in preserving this precious resource.

Water Conservation on Campus

  • Recycling of water
  • Ground Water Recharge System
  • Methods to reduce water wastage
  • Separate sewerage system for waste water and for clean water (rainwater).

Methods to Reduce Water Wastage

  • High-capacity treated water plants have been installed
  • Installing of water meter to identify the consumption and leak
  • Use of hand faucets, self-close taps, auto sense urinal in restrooms
  • Sprinkler System for horticulture

Planned Activities

  • All mechanical flow meters to be replaced with an Electromagnetic Telemetry system.
  • Five rainwater harvesting pits are to be added.
  • Upcoming additional two piezo-meters in the remaining borewells.
  • Two new borewells will be commissioned for the campus.

Sustainable Transportation

OPJU is dedicated to fostering a sustainable transportation culture within the campus community. Students, faculty, and staff can easily access a network of bicycle and mixed-use paths, ensuring the convenience and safety of sustainable transportation methods. Embracing sustainable transportation not only offers cost savings but also contributes to energy conservation, promotes a healthy and active lifestyle, and plays a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions.

Green Campus and Setting

Built in a lush green eco-friendly environment, OPJU has the best infrastructure in the state with an intellectually vibrant and stimulating environment.

Landscape

OPJU takes pride in its construction practices, ensuring compliance with the approved building plan by the Department of Town and Country Planning. We've embraced sustainable methods, such as reusing excavated soil for backfilling and landscaping and utilizing treated water during the construction phase.

Moreover, our commitment to sustainability extends to the construction of our buildings. We've followed the Indian Green Building Council norms, which set forth stringent requirements for constructing both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned spaces. This involves the use of appropriate thermal insulation materials to meet these standards.

In our campus construction, we prioritize eco-friendly practices, utilizing precast RCC, Fly Ash Bricks, and structural steel. Precast buildings offer numerous advantages, including lower pollution, minimal water usage compared to conventional construction, and a reduced environmental footprint. These practices reflect our dedication to both environmental responsibility and sustainable development.

Lighting System

The university's lighting system adheres to the 2007 Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) norms. Notably, our campus is illuminated by an energy-efficient LED lighting system in 90% of common areas, exemplifying our commitment to conserving energy. Furthermore, external street and garden lights are equipped with astronomical timers, ensuring precise on/off switching in accordance with sunset and sunrise timings. This approach not only enhances energy efficiency but also contributes to a more sustainable and eco-friendly campus environment.
